Cycling for Health

What is it? Cycling for Health is an 8/12 week cycling programme to support and encourage people on the Exercise on Prescription scheme to have a more active lifestyle and have fun. The program is currently running in Stockport and Sefton in Merseyside. A new project is due to start in Bolton in May04 .

How does it work? An experienced cycle trainer ( Ian Tierney) will work with the client and determine what you need to get back on your bike. Most people start by going on short rides on a one to one basis, usually close to their home. When you feel ready you will be able to join up with other people who are on the programme on group rides. The sessions last for between one and two hours.

What is included? Other things that are included in the programme are:

advice on cycling and health
where to ride - either off road or on it
basic bike maintenance and repairs
safer cycling roads ( optional)
ideals for getting from A to B on and bike and more

What happens at the end of the course? That's up to you. The current groups have organised themselves into a cycling club to continue the rides. Why not join the Second Chance Cycling club (SCCC). click here for more info.

What if I don't own a bike? We will bring bikes to the session if you don't have access to one. If during the programme you wish to buy a bike, we will advise you and may be able to help you get a cost price bike.

But I'm returning to work. We are interested in hearing from anyone who is returning to work and thinks they may be able to travel all or part of their journey by bike. Just think -stay healthy through your journey to work, and probably save money too.
